Facts About the Thoracic Spine

The spine is made up of several parts. There is the part the supports the head, called the cervical, a part that supports your weight, called the lumbar, the part the supports your pelvis, called the sacrum, and the part that protects all of your vital organs: The Thoracic.

What is the Thoracic Spine?

The spine is not one unit. It is made up of several parts, like the cervical, lumbar, sactum, coccyx, and.. located between your neck and your lower back, are the 12 bones that make up the thoracic spinal region. Cervical Spine As you can see, the thoracic spinal area is located just below the neck, or cervical area of the spine. It contain the rib cage, and is designed to protect all the vital organs in the body, like the heart, lungs, and stomach.

The thoracic spine is very mobile, and it likes to move. If you sit for a long period of time, you most likely will experience a sharp pain between the shoulder blades, or in the lower back. Most of this is caused my bad posture, but thoracic bones can also be thrown out of place by laying in bed for too long, or laying on your side all night.

These thoracic vertebra (of the middle spine) are the ones that support your ribs. Anyone who has experienced throwing out a rib will tell you it wasn't that hard to do, and the pain can be enormous.
