How a Chiropractor Can Help With Pain Management

Chiropractic adjustment can help with pain management, both on its own and alongside other therapies. Everyone has at least heard of chiropractic treatment. Most broadly, it involves correcting the alignment of the spine and joints. Chiropractic is most well-known for the loud pops and cracking sounds that accompany realigning a joint. It uses no medications or pain relievers. It does not involve surgery.

What is chiropractic treatment?

Chiropractic treatment is an alternative therapy. Most chiropractic consultants are not doctors. It has crossover with osteopathy and physiotherapy. Chiropractic focuses on realigning joints and vertebrae. The idea behind it is that minute adjustments to the spine and joints can have profound positive effects on the whole body.

It is noted for its benefits in pain management. A chiropractic session looks much like getting a massage. The emphasis, however, is upon tension in the joints, rather than in the muscles. It is used to assist pain management for a variety of conditions, from old injuries to headaches.

Chiropractic is a holistic therapy

Holistic systems take the patient’s whole lifestyle into account. Rather than looking solely at the main problem, a holistic approach also considers habits, diet and even attitudes. A chiropractor will ask detailed questions about the client’s health and medical history. They will also ask about fitness habits, diet and other medical conditions.

The chiropractor may ask the client to walk up and down to assess their gait. The pre-treatment assessment may also involve raising or moving the arms and legs to various positions. These tests assess asymmetry in the client’s posture. The chiropractor uses these visual assessments to help recalibrate the patient’s spine. The chiropractor will also suggest exercises and stretches at home to further help the client.

Pain management is a key benefit of chiropractic treatment. An old injury or even just a bad habit can be the underlying cause of chronic pain. An adjustment to the knee or ankle can ease pain in the whole leg. Realigning the vertebrae can positively affect the entire body.

What was that cracking sound?

Chiropractic is well-known for the sharp “crack” sounds accompanying treatment. These sounds are often all that a patient knows to expect of a first chiropractic treatment. Reassuringly, these sounds are not actually the joints clicking together. Everyone is familiar with the sensation of popping a knuckle or “cricking” their neck to ease stiffness. The sound accompanying chiropractic treatments is very similar. The sensation is generally described as a profound relief in the affected joint.

The cracking sound is caused by fluids and gases around the joint being released. It is not the bones crunching together. Far from being worrisome, the sound is widely associated with relief or satisfaction. The treatment has long-term benefits for old injuries, neck and back pain, headaches and pain management overall.

Getting chiropractic pain management treatment

Chiropractic adjustment is considered an alternative therapy. It is, nonetheless, widely used alongside mainstream medicine. It can provide lasting help for pain management without recourse to drugs or surgery. Contact a local chiropractor for help with pain management today.
